The historic mackerel season is on, and many are surprised to learn that mackerel — more than cod, whales, or herring — was the major economic driver for the Cape’s fishing industry for much of the 1800s. This “lowly” fish was key to the Cape’s prosperity during decades when our communities were among the wealthiest in Massachusetts and along the East Coast.
