Great piece! Georgie was Joel's first cousin and worked for him at Storyville in Boston. I didn't know about the Harwich place.

Also, my husband and I were both at that Dead show, as high school seniors who had no idea that we'd meet and marry about 10 years later!

I knew that George was Joel's cousin but not that Joel worked at Boston Storyville. I asked Dave who said he and Joel went to the Harwich place once -- Joel loved the ribs they cooked! And the concert coincidence is really great too. Big thanks for the note.

Storyville Harwich?! I had no idea! I have Wein’s (quite massive) biography on my shelf - might be time to crack it. Happy to be sporting my Louis Armstrong hoodie on this Valentine’s Day in New Orleans!

Seth:

Wonderful blog, as usual, but you're remiss by not mentioning the Mill Hill Club, not to mention the Cape Cod Melody Tent. There were historic performances there throughout the years by such groups as The Monkees, The Grass Roots, The Rascals, Judy Collins and one of my all-times favorites, Bread.

Also, I may be mistaken, but I think George Wein first organized the Newport Folk Festival prior to the Newport Jazz Festival. George from time to time used to bring some of his folk acts to campfire at Kirkland.
