Nice story Seth . In the middle fifties and sixties we had two beagles. We lived near a beach cottage area and let the dogs run whenever they wanted. We could hear their yelping as they ran rabbits for hours. They would come home with their tongues hanging out but never with a rabbit. We also had chickens that we only penned in the summertime. The dogs stood around with the chickens keeping each other company. Bruce M

We are spirit beings and our pets have shorter lifecycles so that we can better understand the love, the loss and the forever spirit memories made. Spirits are free, bodies, not so much. Spirit is the key and the connection is the connection, remember and rejoice in the memories, they are eternal and love is the key.

Thanks for a great story, Seth. It reminded me of my life with Max, who lived a very full life on the Cape.

What a story, and as commenters said, a special time. But living here is still doggy heaven with places to go where they can still run free. Even on a leash there are more areas to explore on a walk than most dogs could ever hope for. And then there’s the swimming; my current lab will swim in anything from a smelly bog to breaking wave. Glorious! Thank you for the celebration of your much missed pal.

I remember Bucky. I think unconsciously, maybe, we named our current dog Bucky too. Those days not only dogs ran free but we kids did too.

Good one - Cape Cod doggies roamed free. When we first came here in '58, and brought Betsy, we let her out to come and go as she pleased. And when we went out to play, she seemed to know about it and would show up for the fun. Dog spirits could express themselves better then ... and have friendships. Everyone in the Pines knew Betsy.

A wonderful tribute to quite the character. This dog person treasures the companionship my crew of canines has provided.

Dogs may no longer have Bucky's life here. But there are still few places as terrific for an adventurous pup as the Cape ... as our scribe's great poodle America can attest.
